Are you interested in hair dressing and looking to gain real experience in a professional salon environment?
Our aim is to identify enthusiastic young people who are interested in hairdressing and giving them a genuine opportunity to experience working in a professional salon, with the potential to progress into a longer - term role or apprenticeship.
You will gain an insight into the day to day running of the salon, including client care, salon standards, retail, hairdressing support and professional conduct.

Work Experience for business
One of the most effective ways to recruit and develop young talent is to build strong relationships with local secondary schools. We partnered with a local school that operates a structured work experience programme. Each year, the school recommends a student who has demonstrated a genuine interest in hairdressing and would benefit from a longer-term placement within the salon.
We approach the recruitment process in the same professional manner as we would for any other role. Candidates are invited to attend an interview using our standard interview process (see Interview Template PDF). This allows us to assess their enthusiasm, reliability, communication skills, and suitability for the salon environment.
Following a successful interview, we invite the candidate to attend a trial day. During this time, they are introduced to the salon, meet the team, and gain an understanding of the role and responsibilities outlined in the work experience job description. The trial day also gives both the salon and the student the opportunity to determine whether the placement is the right fit.
If the trial day is successful, we formally offer the student a work experience placement in writing. As part of their onboarding, they receive a copy of the Carter & Shields Salon Handbook, which outlines our expectations, policies, professional standards, and salon culture. This ensures that from the outset, young people understand the importance of professionalism, teamwork, client care, and personal development within the salon environment.
By implementing a structured recruitment and onboarding process, salon owners can create a positive and rewarding experience for both the student and the business, while developing a valuable pipeline of future talent.
